Apple SVP Says It's Not Necessary to Quit Apps and It Won't Save Battery Life

Posted March 10, 2016 at 2:05pm by iClarified
Apple SVP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi has replied to an email about whether or not iPhone users should be regularly quitting apps through the iOS multitasking switcher.

The email was originally sent to Apple CEO Tim Cook but Federighi intervened.

Here's the exchange...

Hey Tim,

Do you quit your iOS multitasking apps frequently and is this necessary for battery life? Just wanting you to put this controversy to rest!

-Caleb

P.S. I'm rooting for Apple in the FBI case.

Hi Caleb,

I know you asked Tim, but I'll at least offer my input:

| Do you quit your iOS multitasking apps frequently and is this necessary for battery life?

No and No.

:-)

Thanks for being an Apple customer!

It's become common practice for many iOS users to manually clear out their multitasking switcher in hopes of improving device performance. As Federighi's email reveals, this should not be necessary. However, apps can perform background tasks and may have bugs or other issues that prevent them from operating as Apple intended. For example, Facebook 'unintentionally' playing silent audio in the background and keeping its app alive until users took notice.

Do you notice improved performance or battery life when you clear out the multitasking switcher? Let us know in the comments!

If you go to settings>battery>battery usage, Facebook is the most power hungry app. In the Facebook app I only use update manually by swiping down instead of turning auto update on every time a new post comes. This will save you some juice. You can do it with other apps that has auto refresh if the app isn't necessary.

Yes I see specially when I close Facebook app, Facebook app sometimes slower the phone and sometimes my phone doesn't wake up when I press home button, so I need to wait for a while like 30 s, this happens rarely but I noticed it happens only when fb app is in background

I do see it perform better when I quit the apps, especially the larger ones like Facebook and some games. Like someone else said also anything with gps drains the shit out of the battery and makes my phone freeze. It's been happening s lot more lately. The battery also lasts a bit longer when you quit these apps, even though it still sucks and we shouldn't have to compromise so many phone features to extend its life.

I only quit apps that are using GPS in the background after i'm done with them. Basically nothing else. And i can say that kill apps actually sometimes leads to worse performance on the device.

I disagree. Try leaving Waze or Apple maps up and feel you iPhone heat up and battery drain. I can understand if it's the calculator app or camera. But not GPS.

... Battery life already socks on my 6S ... Force quitting after I'm done using my iPhone definitely helps rather than leaving them open. It's not a coincidence that when I leave apps open it drains battery and when I close them my battery life is better.
