Apple is 'likely' to take its biometric recognition technology even further and debut an iris scanner in the 2018 iPhone, according to a DigiTimes report.

Samsung is expected to lead all vendors by releasing its new flagship smartphone supporting iris recognition technology in the second half of 2016, while Apple is likely to roll out new iPhone devices with iris sensors in 2018, the sources indicated.

Other smartphone makers said to working on developing biometrics technology include: LeEco, Xiaomi Technology and 360 Qiku. Suppliers including Qualcomm, Truly Opto-Electronics, O-film Tech and Beijing IrisKing are also accelerating development of iris and other biometrics recognition solutions, according to the report.

So.....these other vendors will only be a couple of years behind Microsoft, with Apple pulling up the rear once again? So innovative :P

Yet it's unclear if there is anything new in it. Not to mention how much sense it makes because it has to be made by a company that can make it work seamlessly. So skeptical of you!

Microsoft Lumia 950/950 xl both have iris scanner already. So Samsung can't lead all vendors when it's already out and works excellent. I have a lumia 950 and it works, not a feature I personally use because I don't lock my phone but if you want to use it, it is there.

How can they move to iris technology when they can't even improve the battery life... ???

The can't improve battery life? No matter what battery size that's increased or if it were to stay the same and not to mention the more newer the iOS is the better it gets efficient with battery life, they always get a boost and iOS 9 giving an extra hour of battery is a perfect example!!!
