Subscription? To toggle a feature? Why?

I love Duet. And if Duet pro was a one time purchase I'd likely buy it. But not as a subscription. Right now it is an external monitor for my 2012 MacBook Pro retina and I hardly use the existing touch features. I'd certainly use the graphics pad feature but dislike the annual subscription model. If it was for say the feature pack this year and next year some other feature pack / set then the one time add-on price makes more sense.
