Plex has just made some significant announcements including the launch of an official Plex for Kodi add-on and an update to Plex Media Player which is now free for everyone.

Previously, Plex Media Player required a Plex Pass subscription but it's now "available to everyone, 100% free, no Plex Pass required!" Additionally, you can now run Plex Media Player in a window.

We’ve harnessed our incredibly powerful Web app and wrapped it up inside our lovely Plex Media Player shell to give you a full-fledged “desktop mode” experience right out of the box. With Plex Media Player running in a window, you can now use your mouse and keyboard as nature intended, and switching to the TV UI is as easy as going full-screen.

In a somewhat surprising move, Plex also announced the launch of a Kodi add-on.

We’ve been working closely with some of the best Kodi add-on developers in the world to create an awesome, fully-immersive Plex experience within Kodi. Seriously: once you’re up and running, you’ll never know it’s not Plex! You get the same Plex server discovery, user switching, gorgeous library browsing, and media playback experience you know and love, plus a few (okay, a few dozen) more settings to tweak to your heart’s content.

The Plex for Kodi add-on is a Plex Pass only preview, and you can find it in the new Plex for Kodi forums here.

Have not read anything about it but does anyone know what would be the benefit or addition of having the Plex add-on in Kodi? To my understanding Kodi can do everything that Plex does plus more!

Looks like the add on is for Kodi users to have access to a Plex Media Server.

Yes kodi can do everything plex can do and more but what plex allows you do do is access all your media across multiple devices from anywhere you have an active connection. So your media isnt tied to just one kodi install but a separate server.

Thanks for the responses. But I believe you can do Remote access in Kodi through FTP or UPnP to play your media files on any device outside your house. Through Plex could it be an easier method? Anyone tried both methods and tell the benefits?
