Apple Purportedly Orders All Plastic OLEDs for Curved iPhone 8

Apple has ordered all plastic OLED, not glass, from Samsung Display for the curved iPhone 8, according to the KoreaHerald.

“The OLED version of the new iPhone will all be curved as Apple ordered all plastic OLED -- not glass -- from Samsung Display. Samsung is capable of supplying a little less than 100 million units of curved OLED displays to Apple,” a source familiar with the matter told The Korea Herald.

The site says plastic OLED are used for curved panels like the one on the Galaxy S7 Edge but glass OLED is typically used for flat panels. To differentiate from Samsung's devices, Apple is said to be using new sensing technology.

“The upcoming iPhone may use new sensing technology, which enables the phone to respond when users touch any side of the device. But, Apple may not adopt this technology,” the source added, without elaborating further on details.

Apple is expected to rely entirely on Samsung for OLED panels next year but will add suppliers moving forward. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.

Plastic? SERIOUSLY? Is Tim Cook actually TRYING to destroy the greatness of Apple? Apparently so. I've already moved from iPhone to Android (Google Pixel)...and I've ALWAYS been a staunch Apple advocate...BUT...that Pixel outperforms the iPhone 7 in EVERY way and I haven't been this happy with a phone since I first used the iPhone 3G(s). The only thing keeping me using a Mac (a 2013 non-retina..so I can upgrade at my leisure and not have to worry about soldered in components, and has all the ports I need without having to buy an accessory) is OS X (macOS), but I'm sure given time, Tim Cook will find a way to destroy that as well. Someone needs to clone Steve Jobs so he can save Apple again in 20 years...if it isn't already in absolute shambles by then.

Plastic is better than sapphire. It's unscratchable.
