Finally. Now after the free 1 year basic warranty is over you can purchase apple care instead of paying for a year you would be covered for free anyway. This is good for people that just need protection from manufacturer hardware failure and defects and don't worry about dropping their phone or other consumer fault issues.

The warranty was always like that already. The difference now is that you can actually get warranty later in the process for example at the 300 day mark of your first year. I feel like if you tried to get a warranty at a really late stage Apple would require a diagnostic test on your phone. This requires you visiting the Apple store, checking out all their cool things, and maybe end up buying something more anyways. This is flexing the power of their diagnostic tools to see if they can go ahead and take your warranty money after their diagnostic tools say your phone is OK, and hope on their end your phone does not have any issues. This is also another point in their arsenal as well to the whole "open repair" thing that has been going around where people are asking Apple to provide authorized shops to genuine parts. If they tell the government that they offer 2 years of warranty it would definitely hurt the need for "open repair."

Still got to pay when you break the phone. And $129 for a longer warranty? Seems excessive.
