Mask Beats iPhone X Face ID [Video]

Mask Beats iPhone X Face ID [Video]

Posted November 10, 2017 at 5:48pm by iClarified
Security researchers at Bkav have beat the facial recognition features of the iPhone X using a specially constructed mask.

At the unveiling of the iPhone X, Apple SVP Phil Schiller claimed that Face ID could distinguish between a mask and a real face.

"They (Apple engineering teams) have even gone and worked with professional mask makers and makeup artists in Hollywood to protect against these attempts to beat Face ID. These are actual masks used by the engineering team to train the neural network to protect against them in Face ID. It's incredible!", said Schiller.

Despite Apple's efforts, Bkav security experts claim to have fooled Face ID just a week after the iPhone X release.

Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, Bkav's Vice President of Cyber Security, said: "The mask is crafted by combining 3D printing with makeup and 2D images, besides some special processing on the cheeks and around the face, where there are large skin areas, to fool AI of Face ID".

The company says it plans to reveal how to make a mask that beats Face ID in the near future.

This is bullshit!! Something is not right here. When the phone is on the table in front of the mask you do not see the lock icon change to an unlocked padlock icon on the home screen. However when the phone is in front of his actual face, you see (briefly) the padlock icon change from locked to unlock. So to me this suggests something is not right!!

Thats pretty simple so you need to scan ones face with 3D-scanner. Mold perfect clay/plastic model of that, paint the certain areas and then unlock the phone... wow - how easy is that! Smells like view-magnet... i guess people who are concerned you only need to report the loss as soon as you notice that the 5.8" device is missing from you pocket. Much easier to notice than missing credit card.

He did not shown that the mask is not registered. He entered the passcode after it’s not recognising.

I know what is going on. He first held the iPhone in front of the mask and Face ID didn’t recognize it and asked for pin. He inserted the pin and then he repeated the process few times until Face ID started learning and capturing mask as the owner. Finally, Face ID starts working after several tries. This is what happened I guess.

Some people use their phone to control their locks and IoT so ofcourse security is a big issue and concern.

My god, so what? I could log in into a touch id phone by cutting the phone's owner freaking finger as well. of course it's not like impenetrable. The thing to note here though is I bet in order to make that mask cooperation from the phone's owner was in place! is not like they saw the guy in a picture and made a mask out of it.! so instead of making the freaking mask it would be easier to ask the owner to unlock it.

While this is interesting, it’s highly impractical. It’d be easier to knock the guy out & use his actual face.

It’s always the same people want to show non sense and we can see that the lock symbol does not even unlock that means Face ID is not at all set up...
