Apple Officially Discontinues AirPort and Time Capsule Wireless Routers

Posted April 26, 2018 at 9:47pm by iClarified
Apple has officially discontinued its AirPort lineup of routers including the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.

The company confirmed the news in a statement to 9to5Mac:

We’re discontinuing the Apple AirPort base station products. They will be available through Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last.

The announcement doesn't come as much of a shock. The AirPort Express hasn't been updated since 2012 and the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule haven't seen an update since 2013. In late 2016, Bloomberg reported that Apple shutdown the wireless router team and dispersed engineers to other projects.

Another big hint was when Apple began carrying the Linksys Velop Whole Home Mesh Wi-Fi System earlier this year.

We're sad to see the AirPort router go. Despite not being updated in ages, users still rated it number one in customer satisfaction. Apple easily beat its competition to be the only wireless router awarded a five star rating with a score of 876 out of 1000.

Funny. I just purchased a brand-new airport time capsule last week and installed it tonight. My other one was working fine but I was told I would need an even faster Wi-Fi connection with my newer Computer, and I wanted more backup space. I don'tunderstand why Apple would discontinue a useful product like this. My Apple Time Machine is my Wi-Fi so that means without it I have to go to my Cable provider to upgrade my modem to Wi-Fi which would cost me more every month. I hope this Airport lasts me because I am not ready to cut the cord yet. I still need Wi-Fi for my printers and my Slingbox.

It takes your right family to know one (you have to not be adopted to understand) xD.

Now I hate Apple for doing this! The AirPort Extreme is the absolute best router of its type. Far better than all crappy ISP-supplied stuff. Stable, reliable and super easy to configure 😡.

Funny how I just read a tech connect article hours ago about the 5 Apple products that should be put to rest and the airport products was one of those five, then I see this.
