Apple Takes Cautious Approach, Orders 20% Fewer Components for New iPhones [Report]

Apple has allegedly asked suppliers to prepare about 20% fewer components for its new iPhones set to debut this fall, taking a more cautious approach than it did last year, reports Nikkei.

"Apple is quite conservative in terms of placing new orders for upcoming iPhones this year," one of the four sources, who is in the supply chain, told the Nikkei Asian Review. "For the three new models specifically, the total planned capacity could be up to 20% fewer than last year's orders."

It's said that Apple placed orders for production of up to 100 million units of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X but total shipments for the year are now expected to reach 80 million units.

Apple will likely unveil three new smartphones this year including a 5.8-inch OLED iPhone, a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone, and a 6.5-inch OLED iPhone. Apple's supply chain has purportedly been told to prepare earlier for the OLED models in hopes of preventing a delay similar to the one it experienced with the iPhone X.
