Consumer Reports: Apple Pay is the Best Mobile P2P Payment Service

Posted August 7, 2018 at 3:36pm by iClarified
Consumer Reports has tested five mobile P2P services to see how they stack up against one another. Apple Pay Cash came out on top.

In our first-ever test-based ratings of P2P mobile services, CR rated Apple Pay the highest overall, with excellent or very good marks in the key consumer-protection measures of payment authentication and data privacy. Apple's overall rating was significantly higher than for the other services we tested: Venmo, Square's Cash App, Facebook P2P Payments in Messenger, and Zelle.

Consumer Reports rated each service in five categories: payment authentication, data security, data privacy, customer support and broad access. Apple scored a total of 76, significantly higher than Venmo which came in second at 69.

Apple Pay was the only service that got top marks from CR for data privacy, because its policies state that it limits the information it collects and shares on users and their transactions. It doesn’t store credit card or debit card numbers, and it states in the terms and conditions that it doesn’t sell users’ personal information to third parties, CR found.

An Apple spokesperson said, "Apple Pay Cash is unique from an ease of use, privacy, and security standpoint, as Apple Pay Cash functions seamlessly through hardware, software, and the service all combined."

The only major drawback to Apple Pay was that it required specific Apple hardware and software making it unavailable to many users.

Does Samsung have peer to peer transfers? I think they only have card reader payments.
