Leaked Images of an Accidentally Lost iPhone 4G Prototype? [Update x6]

Posted April 17, 2010 at 8:49pm by iClarified
Images have just leaked of what might be an iPhone 4G prototype found on the floor of a San Jose bar inside an iPhone 3G case.

Engadget received the photos from the new owner who is looking to sell the device.

Right now we don't have a ton of info on the device in question, but we can tell you that it apparently has a front facing camera (!), 80GB of storage (weird, right?), and isn't booting at this point (though it was previously, and running an OS that was decidedly new). It's not clear if this is definitely a production model, or just a prototype that found its way into the world, but it's certainly a compelling design, no matter how you look at it.

We'll post more details as they become available!

*Update: It seems this device has been spotted before. According to @TUDream a chinese tweeter uploaded similar photos some time ago.

*Update x2: Appleferas is saying the images are a Japanese clone.

*Update x3: Engadget is now declaring these images the real deal and provides some evidence to back this up.

*Update x4: Appleferas now says their source was faking about it being fake.

*Update x5: John Gruber has heard that Apple really wants this device back!

*Update x6: Gizmodo has got the device in hand and declares it the real deal!

The "Rumour" understanding is getting out of hand.... iClarified and all the other sites we love should at least have some threshold for these kinds of bs.

it is a fake, or a cheap chinese copy of iPhone. That is not a Apple product.

If its an early stage prototype, why would it have the back scripting on it? It seems like they would just leave back blank. If it was a late stage prototype, why would they bother putting xx for the storage size?

If this is it, and that's a big if.... Does anyone else notice a lack of the sim card tray?? Could this be a prototype for another carrier??? Not sayin' just askin'.

There's no sim tray but there's a hole near the headset jack where you pop out your sim. I wonder what it where it pops out now. There's no more chrome bezel in this prototype which I kinda like. Those bezels in the current iPhone models just attract scratches.

Good eye, I see that now that you pointed it out. I agree that the current chrome bezel is a scratch magnet. Mine looked like hell within 2 weeks.

Well if the back opens like in the top picture then the SIM slot is probably next to the battery if not under it like any other phone.

The sim tray is on the right side of the phone with the screen facing upwards... This placement of the sim is indeed compatible with a pic of a "would be" iphone 4g middle board that had a big hole in the right side... but as more as see this as more i am getting convinced that it's just a bad imitation done by some chinese... i don't think Apple would ever do a phone with such bad aestethics and most of all with the back cover that opens so easily so you can change the battery... -_-
