Samsung is developing a 13.3-inch OLED display panel for the MacBook Air, according to a new report from The Elec. However, it's unclear if the panel will actually get released.
According to the industry on the 30th, it was found that Samsung Display is independently developing organic light emitting diode (OLED) for the 13.3-inch Apple MacBook Air. This product is a model that Apple is developing first to apply OLED to the MacBook Pro lineup following the iPad Pro lineup.
It's said that LG lacks the production capacity to develop the display because its currently working on 11-inch and 13-inch OLED panels for iPad that could arrive by next year. Samsung is only working on OLED panels for the 11-inch iPad.
Samsung Display is purportedly developing for Apple at its A3 line in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do while LG Display is developing at its E6-4 line in Paju, Gyeonggi-do. Both A3 and E6-4 are 6th generation OLED lines.
The Elec says Apple conducts product development for a project two years in advance and notes that a mass production schedule for OLED MacBook Air parts, including panels, has not been specified. Though Samsung is purportedly developing the panel for the MacBook Air, Apple could bring OLED to Macbook Pro first.
it is interpreted that the OLED development project for the 13.3-inch MacBook Air currently underway by Samsung Display has a strong test nature for mass production of OLED for the future MacBook Pro. It is highly likely that OLED for MacBook Pro will be produced in the 8th generation OLED line for IT, which is currently being discussed.
