Samsung Designer Says Galaxy Smartphone is Not a Copy of the iPhone

Samsung Designer Says Galaxy Smartphone is Not a Copy of the iPhone

Posted March 23, 2012 at 12:52pm by iClarified
Samsung designer Lee Minhyouk takes issue with Apple's claim that the Galaxy smartphone is a copy of the iPhone, according to a Reuters report.

Critics of Samsung design liken the company's products to soap vs. perfume.

"Samsung is like a fantastic soap maker," said Christian Lindholm, chief innovation officer of service design consultancy Fjord based in Finland. "Their products get you clean, lathers well. However, they do not know how to make perfumes, an industry where margins are significantly higher. Perfume is an experience. Perfume is meant to seduce, make you attractive and feel good. You love your perfume, but you like your soap."

Lee admits that he is not yet a match for Apple's famed designer Jonathan Ive; however, he believes that Samsung will some day produce breakthrough products.

"I might not be at (Ive's) level yet, but I believe Samsung will produce such iconic products one day. It's not just effort that makes it possible for a new product to be a massive hit. It also has to be timely, and technology should be ready to make a certain design a reality."

Lee says he takes allegations that Samsung "slavishly" copied Apple's iPad and iPhone personally.

"I've made thousands of sketches and hundreds of prototype products (for the Galaxy). Does that mean I was putting on a mock show for so long, pretending to be designing?"

"As a designer, there's an issue of dignity. (The Galaxy) is original from the beginning, and I'm the one who made it. It's a totally different product with a different design language and different technology infused."

Lol I love the rants, but put the shape and style of the phones aside, the apps... If they really wanted to seperate themselves from apple... Why in the hell are Thier apps square, why not make circle apps, like a button. Just my thought on it. A complete copy.

Holy crap. Really? It's a phone. How different could it be? The ear speaker placement is where human physiology demands it should be. The screen is on the front so we can see what's going on. The microphone is on the bottom where the human mouth is. It's rectangularly (?) shaped because that's the standard shape for every video screen in the world. There are buttons on the side because we need buttons. Who copied who? Should they make the phones triangular or circular just to be different? What can really be done? Maybe I'm not creative enough to see the truth of how Samsung can create a radically different phone.

Lol. It's natural. If it wasn't apple it would have been somebody else. This type of phone in terms of design and functionality was eventual. We're phones supposed to be big bricks forever if not for apples designers? No. Apples happen to be in my opinion the best of the bunch. Of course they were the first in terms of materials used and true real world functionality. However if not them then someone else. The phone is basically designed around the screen and the screen has its approximate proportions based on common sense and ergonomics. This exact type of device was eventual. Everything else such as bevel and materials used are finite and repetition is to be expected. Why does it really matter? I like the iPhone for its usability more than what it looks like, not that it hurts that it's so damn pretty.

RantGT - Apple wasn't the first to release a Smartphone of this design, LG Prada was the first and the iPhone is a copy of that!

EVERYONE IS ACCUSING SAMSUNG OF COPING APPLE BUT IN FACT APPLE COPIED LG PRADA PHONE. PRADA PHONE WAS THE FIRST TO USE TOUCHSCREEN AND EVEN THOUGH IT WAS RELEASED IN 2006 IT LOOKS REMARKABLE LIKE IPHONE 4. APPARENTLY LG ARE CONSIDERING SUING APPLE. TYPE IN LG PRADA PHONE IN GOOGLE IMAGES AND SEE FOR YOURSELF WHO COPIED WHO.

In that they are both square and the Prada has a qwerty slide out keyboard and not a glass back?

First version of Prada didn't have sliding keyboard: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Prada

You are looking at the wrong phone! Prada phone was the first one to use touch screen, had apps on it, had rectangular screen similar size as iPhone, had metal bezel round the sides with buttons on it. You tell me in what way id iphone 4 different to the Prada phone. If you think that Apple invented at touch screen smartphone then you are mistaken. Even android system was in the making before apple released theirs. They are the ones that are copying features from android and jailbreakers.

Can't believe SamSung trying to lie blindly. They buy over 300+ iphones/ipod touch/iPad or whatever Apple Releses from the lauch and this gets sent to R&D in SamSung...... What do you think they do with it?

So they compare to a 3G iphone in the pic? but in all honesty all smartphones other than the iPhone can be considered an iPhone copy, samsung just happens to be the most obvious. But before the iPhone we were using flip phones and the blackberry pearl 8100 and curve 8300 were considered high end phones, then the iPhone was released and every company started to produce phones with digitizers instead of buttons. But I disagree with samsung because its more than obvious their designs are just cheap copies of the iPhone

Yeah sure you made a lot of sketches and stuff, but still your idea or INSPIRATION came from somewhere right? You were inspired or enlightened to make similar design from what you saw that amazed you in the first place. Its very obvious from the photos above that Samsung's design was inspired by iPhone's slick design. PERIOD.

i want to say ironically that Samsung design is really different, the guy who design had a vision :) he never saw a iPhone before, no, no , no, that is a original design, haha. he should be descendent from George W. Bush, the one who told the world that Iraq had nuclear weapons. Believes you wanna believe :)

WMD, weapons of mass destruction, biological weapons, though the last call was the yellow cake scandal to declare the nonsense war, in reality Bush never said Saddam had nuclear weapons. More importantly how does this have anything to do with the Samsung and Apple design dispute?

How can people not see how insanely similar that Samsung phone is to an iPhone. The physical design of the phone and the look of the GUI is almost the same as the iPhone. The ear speaker same shape and location, home button is square instead of circle like an iphone, bezel is metal like the iphone, and the screen and icons are setup the exact same as the iphone just shaped a tiny bit different. If you pride yourself in your work don't copy other people's work.

Those designs look similar, but not alike. I think saying Samsung copied apple's designs is going a little too far.
