Microsoft has unveiled a new 'Surface' 10.6-inch tablet with a keyboard touch cover.

Today at an event in Hollywood, Microsoft unveiled Surface: PCs built to be the ultimate stage for Windows. Company executives showed two Windows tablets and accessories that feature significant advances in industrial design and attention to detail. Surface is designed to seamlessly transition between consumption and creation, without compromise. It delivers the power of amazing software with Windows and the feel of premium hardware in one exciting experience.

ADVANCES IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
Conceived, designed and engineered entirely by Microsoft employees, and building on the company's 30-year history manufacturing hardware, Surface represents a unique vision for the seamless expression of entertainment and creativity. Extensive investment in industrial design and real user experience includes the following highlights:

Software takes center stage: Surface sports a full-sized USB port and a 16:9 aspect ratio – the industry standard for HD. It has edges angled at 22 degrees, a natural position for the PC at rest or in active use, letting the hardware fade into the background and the software stand out.

VaporMg: The casing of Surface is created using a unique approach called VaporMg (pronounced Vapor-Mag), a combination of material selection and process to mold metal and deposit particles that creates a finish akin to a luxury watch. Starting with magnesium, parts can be molded as thin as .65 mm, thinner than the typical credit card, to create a product that is thin, light and rigid/strong.

Integrated Kickstand: The unique VaporMg approach also enables a built-in kickstand that lets you transition Surface from active use to passive consumption – watching a movie or even using the HD front- or rear-facing video cameras. The kickstand is there when needed, and disappears when not in use, with no extra weight or thickness.

Touch Cover: The 3 mm Touch Cover represents a step forward in human-computer interface. Using a unique pressure-sensitive technology, Touch Cover senses keystrokes as gestures, enabling you to touch type significantly faster than with an on-screen keyboard. It will be available in a selection of vibrant colors. Touch Cover clicks into Surface via a built-in magnetic connector, forming a natural spine like you find on a book, and works as a protective cover. You can also click in a 5 mm-thin Type Cover that adds moving keys for a more traditional typing feel.

An Amazing Windows Experience
Two models of Surface will be available: one running an ARM processor featuring Windows RT, and one with a third-generation Intel Core processor featuring Windows 8 Pro. From the fast and fluid interface, to the ease of connecting you to the people, information and apps that users care about most, Surface will be a premium way to experience all that Windows has to offer. Surface for Windows RT will release with the general availability of Windows 8, and the Windows 8 Pro model will be available about 90 days later. Both will be sold in the Microsoft Store locations in the U.S. and available through select online Microsoft Stores.

Contributing to an Expanded Ecosystem
One of the strengths of Windows is its extensive ecosystem of software and hardware partners, delivering selection and choice that makes a customer's Windows experience uniquely their own. This continues with Surface. Microsoft is delivering a unique contribution to an already strong and growing ecosystem of functional and stylish devices delivered by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to bring the experience of Windows to consumers and businesses around the globe.

This product will put apple to shame since it can run a desktop OS. if only the iPad could run mountain lion that will be a different story. I have 3 Apple computers and i am getting this tablet as soon as it comes out. Microsoft has done it this time.

I'm sorry that I'm not able to like the metro UI design despite appreciating it for being different from the others. Furthermore I'm sad not able to like the design of the pad itself as it's so 80's (except for being flatter than anything else in the 80's)... But I'm really surprised by MS about one thing: They seem to have been able to keep this whole thing secret! Something Apple doesn't seem to be able to do anymore... ... but maybe it was a lot easier for them due to lack of interest??

Yup, i like apple products, I own a lot of them, but I kinda feel I need a change, I'm sick of their limited OS! Microsoft tablet will be a big success, I can be sure of that! P.S For the haters _!_

Second to that - and im sure so does million others who feel the same. iOS and OSX should merge or atleast have a option to bootup to the real OSX-mode.... the hardware is not anymore the hold up but Apple is.

If you consider the Microsoft success against an incredibly entrenched industry leader, Sony's Playstation, this could be a very exciting competition. I look forward to Apple having to earn their crown again.

In days of old, the weird offspring of the unholy union of a wise woman and her familiar would be taken from the birthplace and ceremoniously torched by a baying crowd on a windswept mountainside. Fortunately, in these enlightened times, they are simply sealed in cardboard boxes by Microsoft and shipped around the world to gullible computer illiterates who know no better. Unlike their medieval counterparts when rescued by a sympathetic passer-by, the Surfaces cannot be lovingly tended. Place them on your lap and they simply clatter to the floor and break into so many pieces. And they call this progress?!

So what? You only buy products that are first-ever-to-introduce-something or what?

Haha! Called "Surface" but about 3 inches thick with a load of twiddly bits attached to it. It'd make a nice windbreak for my iPad. Microsoft just don't get it. Poor things.

I smell a Flop. Microsoft should invent something else, refrigerators or microwaves. Oh wait Samsung already does that. Oh well.
Flop?
Flop? - June 19, 2012 at 1:38am
Yoh smell a Flop? Lol. You gotta be kidding, right? Stop being emotional and open your eyes to reality. I'll help you. Start considering the facts below. 1 - Apple invented the PCs? Definetly yes. 2 - iMac is amazing? Agreed. 2 - Apple Reinveted the smartphones? Agreed. 3 - Apple inveted tablets? Certainly not. 4 - Reinvented it than? Agreed. 5 - Kept innovating since it became market share leader? Totally disagre. 6 - WP7/8 is a copy of iOS? Not at all. 7 - Microsoft innovated some thingsrecently? Yes. If you have to work (autocad, photoshop, excel, etc) would you use an iMac or and iPad? Yes, definetly and iMac (or Mac pros). And what if the iPad could replicate the OS X inteface and be used with a keyboard and mouse? I woukd go for the iPad, but Humm, iPads dont do that. So, now please explain to me why would I buy an iMac and an iPad when, NOW, all I need to buy is a Surface? I hope I helped you being more rational instead passional.
Hmm
Hmm - June 19, 2012 at 1:44am
Who needs a mouse when you can use you fingers!!
Really?
Really? - June 19, 2012 at 1:52am
Really? Who needs a mouse? I bet a dollar you just bought a iMac/Mac pro recently? And even if you didn't you should ask Apple why did they just updated their most mobile OS X hardware without a touchscreen, but with trackpad and mouse support instead. You need to read "Flop?"s above commet again. See reality. Commercial reality. Not very long term star wars utopic "reality".
Jaime
Jaime - June 19, 2012 at 2:17am
I was joking, it sounds to me you are the passional one. Do you work for Microsoft by any chance? You realize this is iclarified not skydrive right?. You are preaching to the wrong crowd. So sorry.
vasodys
vasodys - June 19, 2012 at 8:09am
You talk about AutoCAD and Photoshop when you clearly could not replicate the ease that you would have with a mouse and keyboard on a 27" screen while now you eill have a 10.6" tablet with a touch screen which cannot provide the precision of a mouse.
