To put the iPhone into recovery mode so you can do an iTunes firmware restore follow these steps: Step One Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac.  Step Two Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.  Step Three As soon as the screen goes black release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Does anyone know how to take the iphone out of recovery mode without actually recovering? Restart doesn't do it or repeating recovery mode steps.. is it stuck like this now?

This tutorial is incorrect - it is actually setting the phone in DFU mode. To set in recovery mode follow what Dom has said or use this method - power off iphone, hold home button and while holding the home button, connect usb cable. keep holding until you see the usb cable and itunes logo image shown in this tutorial

The best way to ensure your iphone goes into recovery mode rather than DFU mode is to:
-Hold down just the power button and slide to power off
-Turn phone back on, then quickly hold down the home button as it starts up.
