How to Free Space on Your iPhone Root File System
Saturday, 9th February 2008, 01:02 am
These are instructions on how to free up space on your iPhones Root File System.

Step One
Press to launch Installer from your Springboard.

Step Two
Press Donate Later and don't forget to do that!

Step Three
Press to select the Install tab at the bottom of the screen.

Step Four
Press to select Utilities from the list of Categories.

Step Five
Press to select Boss Tool from the list of Packages.

Step Six
Press to select the Install button at the top right of the screen.

Step Seven
Press to select the large Install button that appears.

Step Eight
When the install completes you will be returned to the Categories Menu. Press the Home button to return to your Springboard. Now press BossTool to launch the application.

Step Nine
Press to select Free Disk Space from the menu.

Step Ten
Press to select Relocate Fonts from the menu. Note we could relocate other stuff but fonts is about 84MB so that is more then enough! Also take notice this screen will display how much free space you currently have available.

Step Twelve
Press the large Do It! button to continue.

Step Thirteen
After a few minutes you will be returned to the Free Disk Space menu and you will now see 84MB extra space on your root file system!

NOTES***: Big thanks goes out to Big Boss for creating this tool! Much appreciated. If you are considering moving Applications then don't forget to set Auto-Lock to never.

I see what you mean :/ Really strange... The only thing I can think of at this stage is restoring, then jalbreaking and jailbreaking with the collection of tools that Zibri put together. (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=656 and http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=655). That would probably be quicker than trying to find the problem. Of course if you have a ton of settings, contacts, etc then that would be a pain. I don't think that this has anything to do with the new folder layout, /private/var/mobile rather than /private/var/root, though. Though if possible it would be good to check that there is an at least an Installer folder in one of them. What's the contents of /private/var/mobile/Library/Installer/ ? (At least, I take it that you can access the phone via SSH?

all packages... really strangs, still doesn't work. Can it be that because of the program the root has changed? or the installer can;t find the right map to install it?

The repositories changed recently. See if you can install the "Community Sources" package in the "Sources" package. That should replace the sources with new ones rather than just refreshing the package list. Or do you have this problem with all packages?

@wichert: Either you are not connected to the WiFi network in your home (Settings -> WiFi) or there's something wrong with your sources. If that's the case, in Installer, tap Sources along the bottom, then Refresh at the top left. If that fails, check that you have a working connection to the Internet via Safari.

@seljose: isn't that enough space to play with? I only have 64mb after relocating the fonts - but ibegan with 1mb right after upgrading to 1.1.3. What do you need the extra space for?

hi, i installed boss tool onto my jailbroken otb 1.1.2 iphone. i ran the "relocate fonts" and clicked "do it" as well. but nothing seems to happen after that, and my free disk space still remains at the initial space which is 53mb. any ideas?
