Man Punches Teen for Refusing to Turn Off iPhone on Flight

Russell Miller, a 68-year-old Treasure Valley man, punched a 15-year-old teenager after he refused to turn off his iPhone.

Witnesses say the teen was on his iPhone playing games and listening to music. When the intercom announced that all electronics be turned off, the teen ignored the request. As a result, Russell Miller got angry and punched the 15 year old. The pilots radioed air traffic control and cops were sent to the gate to arrest Russell Miller.

He punched him so hard there was a mark on the teen's arm," Lipple said. "That gave us probable cause to believe the reports from the other passengers."

Miller was charged with one count of misdemeanor battery and booked into the Ada County jail.

Rules are rules. So all of you guys follow rules all of the time? No speeders on this site? You would applaud someone else bashing your car because you were above the speed limit? Oh, that's right. I forgot. That's a stupid rule and you are allowed to break it. Come on, folks. You are making no sense.

They should release the man after 24hours. I'm pretty sure the teen was showing attitude against him and got on his nerves. As for the device, it's fine to use it as long as it does not transmit and receive signal, aka Airplane mode. I usually leave my iPhone on to record takeoff and landings. Sucks to be in jail for him. I completely understand his actions, it's just too much to stay calm with a noncompliant Conduct Disorder teens these days...

Regardless of whether the teen's iPhone was transmitting or not, we can't have anyone beating up on others, particularly in a passenger plane. That old crank should have to sit in an iPhone class for a day.

This man will not get released before 24 hours. Regardless of his reason you can't go around punching minors, no matter how annoying they may be. He will be facing charges, there is no excuse.

Hmm. On my recent flight to Germany we were told to "switch of ALL electronic devices during take off and landing." In mid-flight, you can use any device but telecommunication equipment. But I guess it's no big deal - air traffic security is so tight nowadays, if those devices really posed a thread, controls would be much stricter or you'd be forced to check them in instead of taking them into the cabin.

ALL electronics must be turned off during take off and landing. Includind phones in flight mode, notebooks, iPods, etc.... Electronics are only allowed during flight at cruising altitude!!!!!

Well, was the stupid teen arrested for endangering the lives of all the other passengers by not turning off his iPhone?

No one was endangered by the iPhone. There is no federal regulation regarding on-board electronics precisely because the FAA knows that they pose no safety threat. Each airline is left to make whatever rules they see fit. Why the airlines insist on keeping these rules regarding electronics is beyond me. It is true, however, that it is a federal offense to not obey the flight crew's instructions, regardless of how nonsensical they may be. However, it is not the job of some out-of-control wannabe cop to enforce said instructions.

actually the whole turn off your phone on the plane thing is complete BS. it doesnt affect shit, and the only reason its not allowed is they cannot definitively prove that nothing happens I personally have left my phone on multiple occassions when travelling, and i tavel alot. Nothing has ever happened, and nothing ever will. Even then assuming it does have some kind of effect, if the phone is in airplane mode, then it is like it being off. There is no reason to turn it off on top of it being in airplane mode. airplane mode shuts off all communication transmissions of the phone. anyways if that old man had punched me, i woulda slapped the shit outta him before knocking him out

There IS a reason... People with headphones and talking are distracted, and in case of emergency, you need people attention. That's why they ask you to turn it off, not because your telephone will mess up something. If that was remotely possible; the TSA would have banned them long time ago...
