Apple Starts Selling Unlocked iPhones in the U.S.

Posted June 14, 2011 at 6:17am by iClarified
Apple has started selling unlocked iPhones in the United States as predicted.

All the features of iPhone 4 without a contract commitment. Use it on the supported GSM cellular network of your choice.

If you don’t want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone 4 is the best choice. It arrives without a micro-SIM card, so you’ll need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide.

The 16GB version is available for $649. The 32GB version is $749.

I called to at&t Usa and asked me to unlock my Iphone 4 as i bought the Iphone without commitment. So ethically when they started selling unlocked phones in USA so they should unlock the old Iphone which were purchased earlier. it would help to many of us and while roaming internationally as we can have any other carrier of our choice. Please think apple even we have paid the amount.

So what was the result? Will they unlock iPhone 4s that were bought without commitment, before they started unlocking?

Nishant - June 28, 2011 at 11:48am
No, They wont unlock t5he iphone as according to them at that time AT&T was the exclusive carrier for iPhone 4.

I spoke with an apple employee about the new usa unlocked iphone and he confirmed that it is in no way different than the locked at&t iphone. It still unfortunately still has the same at&t frequency which may be re-tuned in the 4s or iphone 5, but as for the iphone 4 usa factory unlocked it is only capable of using t-mobile edge and not 3g signal. It is however facetime capable on tmobile which is definitely a plus as the previous mywi cydia software is as far as I know still only compatible with 4.0.1 I have already bought the white iphone 4 this last saturday with the aim of using a gevey pro sim, but apple told me I could just return it and get an unlocked one for another $50 so I cant wait, finally getting rid of my nexus s (great phone, but still not an iphone)

Att is buying T-mobile... so that really sucks!!!!!! if T-Moble sticks around as T-Mobile and unlocked iphone4 works with t-mobile 3g, i'm in. Do you think this is to use up inventory in room for iphone5???

That means if the person who bought iPhone 4 without commitment earlier and wanted to unlock, can the iPhone be unlocked by AT&T?

te72s - June 14, 2011 at 9:50pm
No I have tried numerous times by calling Apple and AT&T each one says it's the other's responsibility. Bullshit.

Interesting post. I buy and sell iPhones. If I buy the new iPhone factory unlocked 4 And I list it on eBay for 850 dollars I will make $60.61. Plus if I ship to eastern Europe. I add 40 for shipping and insurance. So that's $890 for a buyer to pay and then turn a profit. I buy from international buyers groups for less money. So I can buy cheaper elsewhere. When the iPhone 5 does come we don't know if there will be factory unlock for it. I am guessing no. I think pricing will be 649 for factory unlock 4. 600 for locked iPhone 5. And 499 for older iPhone 4 locked. But the real reason is to get rid of many iPhone 4s as they can. I Internet prices will drop only a little for 3GS and 3G. Am I wrong? Educate me!!!

I spoke with apple today and they have confirmed the iphone 4s and iphone 5 will be factory unlocked. whether or not tmobile 3g compatible is still unknown

I think this will help sellers. With tax paypal and eBay and shipping. International sales will good for gevey simcard iPhone 4s

If you buy an unlock iphone4 from apple, then you jailbreak it, will the unlock be lost?
DacksMac
DacksMac - June 14, 2011 at 3:07pm
YES IT WILL BE LOST!!!!! OH NO DON'T DO IT!! jk, Jailbreaking has NOTHING to do with a factory unlocked phone. All jailbreaking does it slaps a program called Cydia onto the phone Springboard so you can add third party apps
DacksMac
DacksMac - June 14, 2011 at 3:09pm
SORRY, let me rephrase what I said because it sounded off... Jailbreaking a phone is only a software trick, unlocking is a hardware trick. SOOO jailbreaking won't mess up the factory unlock

Thank you DacksMac. I appreciate it.

This is obvious for me, Apple just want to sell all iPhone4 they have, as fast as possible, before release the new iPhone that will be better and at the same price.

I'm sorry, but MAJOR LOL's at the people on here complaining about an unlock to the Devs. Now you have NO reason to not have an unlocked iPhone. BUY ONE.

farpthor - June 14, 2011 at 12:40pm
Rephrase that to ANOTHER one. That's where the problem is. I wonder if now AT&T will give us the unlock code for our iPhones, at least the ones we bought without a plan...

this is unfair to us that bought the same phone without a contract... and been using a locked phone for a year now.

Welcome to three years ago USA. 90% of the networks in the UK now unlock contracted phones for a small fee or even for free anytime in the contract. Will the US networks do this? I would be suprised if they do!

Apple WAS selling unlocked phones before, but they were attached to a contract. Please fix the article.

Are you suggesting Apple was selling unlocked (i.e. the ones that can be used with any carrier) iPhones before and only YOU knew about it?

DacksMac
DacksMac - June 14, 2011 at 7:39am
$649 is actually cheap as shit compared to European prices. Shit, when I loved in Italy in the Navy I paid $550 for a POS Motorola Razr back in 2004. In Italy there are no contracts, you must pay full price.

Hold on iPhone 4 UNLOCKED being sold??? Does this mean iPhone 4s or 5 will not be released til next year or will that be contracted????
Doorman
Doorman - June 14, 2011 at 7:27am
Looks like Steve Jobs trying to close down outside market including ebay and other sites! Trying to make people buy directly from apple.

Tom - June 14, 2011 at 7:24am
Damn kind of steep after tax..... Cheaper if I buy from outside... Or does this mean now the outside market will see this and prices will go up???

What about us that bought a phone without a contract?

te72s - June 14, 2011 at 9:02am
Exactly. I'm pissed that I paid for my phone outright and I have not been given the option. I want to know how they will handle this.

I hope we can get an unlock code or something, I've been using this iPhone with a Gevey SIM.

I'm using Gevey SIM too - in Thailand with an iPhone 4 bought at an Apple Store in The US. Works like a charm. Although I bought it outright, I still want it unlocked officially.

There are still a lot of unlocked iPhones out there. I still hope there will be a ultrasnow for the iphone 4. My question is how this will affect the world market? Will the price of iPhones drop or rise?

LOL
LOL - June 14, 2011 at 11:42am
I know i guess i can no longer have a extremely well business in reselling iphones if they just release factory unlocked ones! Finally usa should have been the first country to have the unlocked iphones first
Prince
Prince - June 14, 2011 at 1:38pm
Its obvious that the DEV team and whoever else was paid not to put out an unlock 9 months ago by apple. I mean come on, they went from telling us that the unlock was on its way, to then all of a sudden absolutely no info at all. But they still worked to get out each jailbreak with each update. If your paying attention to Ios5, it going to have a lot of features that were in the jailbreak community first. It benefits apple to let the jailbreaks continue. A lot of the apps in the cydia community can be used as prototypes for apple in the future. And think about all the extra money they get if you have to buy a phone from them unlocked instead of online somewhere and get ultrasn0w.
