Apple is reportedly working on an iPad mini that will cost $249-299 and feature a 7.85-inch Sharp IGZO display panel, according to MyDrivers.
UnwiredView relays the Chinese report:
Also 'confirmed' apparently, via the even more reliable 'anonymous industry sources', is the fact that the iPad Mini will have IGZO display panels made by Sharp. IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) is a thin-film transistor (TFT) tech that allows the tablet to be thinner than similar models, while increasing 'endurance' and display quality.
While the source of this report is unknown there have been several previous reports that corroborate the price and screen size of the purported iPad mini.

Alas, we knew this was coming. As soon as Steve died and someone else was appointed, you just knew they were going to start fracturing the market. Hopefully it will stop at a 7" display, but with a new iTV coming, they'll soon have a whole range of different sizes, shapes, and features for it.

Apple must do something like this to compete with the low-cost market, otherwise they will lose big. A tablet is pretty much a buying portal, and the company that gets more tablets in more hands will win. Laptops are for work, desktops...are dead...and tablets are where you listen to music, shop, read the rumor mills, and socialize. And spend all your money.
Apple's success is from selling their hardware to connect to their software, like iTunes.
The moment you buy a non-apple device is the moment you turn away from iTunes, etc. Apple built its success by offering iTunes for Windows, but will they ever release iTunes for Android?
This is the new battleground: who can subsidize tablets more so that they can make their money back on sales, like the printer or video game console model. And which company is better at giving stuff away and making money from helping you buy more stuff?
So far, that's google's racket. Facebook has so far squandered their chance at monetizing their glorified picture-sharing site, apparently it's really difficult to get away with.
Apple cannot hide behind American judges for long, it must actually compete, and right now it is not very competitive.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention to the marketplace for long. Apple has been doing fine for quite a few years by avoiding the low cost market. By keeping to the high end, they give the customers what they want, and prevent alienating customers with inferior products. The are plenty of others tying to capitalize on that market, and none has made much money, or found much success at it, whereas Apple continues to rake in the dough, and capture market share. Yes, Android has more 'devices', but they don't make any money on them, and no one uses them. People LIKE Apple products because they can rely on their quality. Trying to make 'cheap' products will hamper that 'image'.

If they kill the 4G model, it would be a great mistake for the Nexus 7 would take over this market segment. It is best just to reduce the screen size, keep the A5 processor. Then the mini iPad would be an all-purpose device with GPS and everything.
