The 32GB iPhone 7 Has 8X Slower Write Speeds Than the 128GB and 256GB Models [Video]

Posted October 19, 2016 at 3:12am by iClarified
A new video confirms previous reports that the 32GB iPhone 7 has 8X slower write speeds than the 128GB and 256GB models.

Unbox Therapy demonstrates a benchmark and real world test of write speeds on a 32GB and 256GB iPhone 7. The benchmark found that the 256GB model was able to write data at 341 MB/s; whereas, the 32GB was only able to write data at 42 MB/s.

In the real world test, a 4.2GB video took 2 minutes 34 seconds to write to the 256GB model and 3 minutes and 40 seconds to write to the 32GB model.

Oh please! This is such a non issue in the real world application. Make sure both devices have the same free space before you run the test. Plus use smaller files because in real life, what huge file will one be transferring on a 32 GB phone anyway? And these are write speeds. The 32 GB phone's write speeds are plenty enough for the typical writes that would be needed in real world usage. Remember that these are just speed tests that aren't a reflection of real world usage. It's like having a 10 lane highway vs a 5 lane highway but you only typically have 3 cars on the road. So what if you have 10 lanes? You're not even reaching that limit.

Yes cause it is TLC, meaning that you need more layer to write faster or more plane. It is common sense. Research TLC NAND technology. the lower of the dye and lower of the capacity means slower write, but read will be the same but the more destiny you have, the faster it is cause of TLC Technology. MLC technology is the same way but in the beginning MLC can already write 3x faster then TLC technology.

So Apple's $1000 iPhone has "cheap parts"? F*cking outrageous.

It won't be a bad apple if it still holds up compared to the other recently released phones.

Truth: iOS and OSX aren't as buggy and less reliable as you'd expect seeing how users continue to upgrade to them and how it shows the 10th anniversary of north of these operating systems which also proves how big on release they are more than ever. Truth: Fail or not, iPhone 5c outsold the s4 in most places being the 2nd most sold iPhone around the time iPhone 5s was released, but it's not near as bad as being the worst Apple products that Jobs had his fair share over, in fact nothing nowadays can possibly top that after so many attempts to enter other markets, but couldn't do well. Apple isn't slowly turning when like I said, it shows that they not only gave what Jobs was going against at the time, but they continue to be proven to be the best in class company rather than whatever you view them to be which means it's still the company Jobs had envisioned. This new Apple is as good as the old one, but not to where some Apple products fail and die out into obscurity like some products from the past (like a gaming console for example), but greed? The expensive produces have to do with carriers and storage so it makes sense from what you pay for out of this company in this so-called monstrosity. No matter what choices Apple makes, it can't damage the company based on how these 5 years were strong, that Apple will never be just another brand because they don't make phones that are made like a carbon copy of another android phone. It breaks my heart seeing some Apple users especially like you go against the company as if you're half fan half hater that just because Jobs is gone, this is all they need to think of just to make quick excuses as if they could give less of a damn to understand logic and reasoning and not understand reality as far as they go. As long as Apple stays on top of the game as of now, as long as their products are proven to be good as they are currently, there is nothing that can go against it just because one is naive about all of it.

Bad Apple! Different cameras on different size phone. Now different write speed for different capacity phone....what's next?

Bad guy! Different cameras means compromising between features and size. Different write speeds was unexpectedly affected by storage somehow. Not that it was unintentional. I'll tell you what's next, two lightning ports on one iPhone and one on the other, or better yet, one iPhone with a kickstand built in while the other doesn't have one. One can dream!

Well.. thats bit of a sneaky trick from Apple. Do they not make enough money to "give people what they advertised"? It's not really about the speed of the iPhone7 32GB but rather the way Apple failed to come forth with the facts when they announced the iPhone7.I've always loved Apple products, but I've come to notice a few corners being cut lately. I would be so pissed if I bought the 32GB version..

What do you mean fail? What if this iPhone was used against the s7 test? What about a comparison between the 6s and 32GB 7?

krusty22 - October 20, 2016 at 5:22am
I just mean that Apple should have stated that the 32GB version has slower read/write speeds during the annoucement... it's just good practice. Every person who've bought the 32GB iPhone7 believed that the only difference is the storage capacity. Thus they've bought a sub-performing iPhone7. If they were aware of the read/write difference they might have opted to buy a higher capacity version. I just dont like the fact that Apple witheld the info..

Not really. If storage was an issue itself like memory loss, it would be a problem, but just pay extra and boom, problem solved.

Isn't this expected behavior for SSD. It is always slower at smaller sizes. For example look at this spec sheet. This product only goes down to 64 GB. I think it would be even slower at 32.

Iphone7 32gb here, write speed: around 80 MByte/sec, so no, it's not 8x slower, but 4x. Not as bad, but still...

"Last iPhone" means usually 'I'm going over at Android'. If that's your choice of mobile OS then it means that you've never owned an iPhone (cause if you ever owned one you wouldn't want to get back at Android) or it means that you have never owned an Android and you're about to get a taste of it and boy you're in for a huge surprise! One that will bring you back in max a year... 'Good luck!'

gamerscul9870 - October 20, 2016 at 3:47am
It's probably because Apple is focused on fixing the problems with the new iPhone (despite 6s fixing the bending issues) like mostly software related before actually making hardware upgrades to the phone even the littlest ones, but hey, it can't hurt to wait a year until you can finally buy an iPhone released in nearly a year or over. You could avoid some of the hardware delays and tricks if you try it like that and still be satisfied. To me, I own a 6s and kept the 5s and I still plan to upgrade because of how better it gets.
