Grembe Launches Custom Audio for iCommunicate

Nine months ago, Grembe Inc. developed iCommunicate, an iPhone app that allows the user to create customized storyboards and visual schedules. In response to feedback from customers, Grembe has created custom audio, which is now available as an iTunes in-app purchase. Now, you can record audio in any language.

Lisa Brandolo Johnson, a physical therapist, and Jeffrey Johnson, a software engineer, combined their skills along with their personal experience to found Grembe Inc. Grembe's mission is to create quality, versatile, affordable apps for parents and professionals. The additional features on iCommunicate stay true to that mission.

Lisa Johnson says, "Everyone's needs are individual and unique. The audio feature can help a child with an expressive language delay, bring a voice to someone who cannot speak, or provide verbal instructions to help someone learn a new task." For example, a parent could record a phrase such as "I want" and the child could point to one of 39 snack choices on the storyboard. This feature allows a child with language difficulties to make his needs known, as well as model the speaker's language.


Melanie Austin, MS, CCC-SLP, director of speech and language services at South Shore Therapies says, "I'm excited to hear about the addition of the audio component on iCommunicate. Adding audio to the already existing visuals of the current iCommunicate application will provide a nice multisensory way to provide schedules, make requests, and create storyboards. Most of our therapists use the iPod touch within our daily treatment sessions in order to access apps like iCommunicate and iReward. These apps are effective and useful for a variety of purposes. Another added bonus is that most children nowadays are extremely motivated by technology regardless of age or disability."
