RipDev Says Farewell to the iPhone Community

After many contributions to the jailbreak community including Installer, Icy, and Kate, RipDev is saying farewell to the iPhone. The surprise notification comes via a posting on their site.

It's been a great two years, but unfortunately, the time has come for Ripdev to close its doors. There are many reasons for this, most of which we probably will never disclose (unless we are forced to). The important thing is that due to circumstances we will likely be unable to support the titles we have created over the years further. They will be perfectly operatable on the firmware versions they were created for, and you will be able to download and use them — but they will no longer be supported and updated (except for i2Reader Pro that is not being developed by us and that will be kept in sync with its App Store version). We will, of course, transfer the licenses to the new devices — just email us. Our Cydia repository will be operational until at least next year, so be assured that the products you liked and paid for will be available for you to (re)install.

Icy, our lightweight DPKG installer, is now available in source form under MIT license. You're free to do whatever you want with it. It would be nice if someone picks up the project…

It was a honor to be in the iPhone jailbreak community, and we are proud that we have certainly made a ripple or two.

ur wrong. installer was written by nullriver software. they sold it to ripDev after FW2.0 was released.

I'm glad that I live to see this day came. My iPhone was bricked by Caterpillar (that's Kate before they change the app's name for those who dont know) and many more around the globe... RipDev also made a mess when they try to takeover and remake Installer, and that trigger me to choose Cydia. RIP RipDev, and please don't mess up people's devices again.

Unfortunately, theres nothing interesting here, other than that we are very, very sad about the fact the things turned that way. Heres a bit of advise: dont blindly trust your business partners one day it may turn out that they will steal a years worth income of the company and create another one, leaving you without possibility to control what you have been creating for several years.

Ripdev much better than some people whom just complaining about things but didn't do anything. Very useless!!!

Rumor has it that the Dev Team works on every other baseband. So I suggest you hang on to your horses for now and jump the gun only after you see no results post another major IPSW hitting the airwaves. Meanwhile, hang on to your expensive iPod 3G or 3GS.

A (jailbroken) iPhone (2G, 3G, 3GS) user like me will always be grateful to RipDev for their contributions. The experience with Installer in my first 2G comes to mind. I guess that 2G experience gave me the exposure to utilize and appreciate all that Cydia offered us from the 3G onwards. But the fact remains, Installer was the stepping stone to all that's great about jailbreaking and Cydia today. With a raised Vodka shot glass; Nasdrovya RipDev :)

You know, I'm very sad that RipDev is going away. It brought us some great programs that were used by many around the world. For me personally, it was the Cyrillic Keyboard. Was it just a couple of Russians? Probably was. But throughout history, Russians have pioneered (and messed up) some of the greatest ideas and tasks in the world. They've made a ripple effect. ohhhhh :( this sucks! icy was quicker and had a much better visual side than cydia. shame it is gone, now i have to use only cydia :( hope someone picks this project up again, but who knows. all those who pay this out obviously didnt even use it. thanks a lot for the contribution guys! :D

Icy was fast and cool looking but once again still sucked. As an alternative we now have RockApp. It's also fast and allows for queing and install&search. It's not the rock solid house Cydia, but if ur still looking for an alternative to the 15+secs it takes to launch cydia, RockApp is pretty good. U can also add most cydia sources directly to it. Btw my phone was bricked by catepillar and later on again by Kate. I paid in full for nothing. Had to restore As a new phone to get it to work. Smh.

Installer was here long before Cydia... it was the original concept behind the whole idea. Infact Installer installed applications before apple had released it's own app store or "app installer".... the first people to provide app isntalls on iphone was RipDev...Saurik... or even Apple. sad day.

I ALSO wish people would think before they post, or at least read up. The original Installer was NOT made by RipDev, the rights to use the NAME fell into their hands when Cydia made it no longer relevant and they stuck around trying to make a buggy double standard that the scene didn't need. Not only that, but they would release shittified "alternatives" of jailbreak apps such as SBSettings and then CHARGE for them to try and capitalize on a venture they had no business being in in the first place. Good riddance is right.

Yeah, that´s right! Ripdev didn´t start it, they eventually got the name and started charging bucks for everything! Someone got greedy! Cydia was and is the heir of the original Installer.

Installer 1 till 3 was made by nullriver and partly by RiPDev. RiPDev bought the rights when firmware 2.x came out. Then they wanted to improve Installer but the only thing they did was making it worse.
