AirPower May Be 'Doomed' Due to Issues With Heat Management, Inter-device Communication, Interference [Report]

A new report from Sonny Dickson claims to reveal more details on why Apple's AirPower wireless charger hasn't been released.

According to our sources, the broad feeling of many working the project at Apple is that the device may be doomed to failure, and may not be viable at all unless significant advancements can be made.

There are a few issues that are purportedly holding back the device.

● Heat management
The charger produces far too much heat affecting the ability of devices to charge and preventing Apple's custom charging chip from functioning properly.

● Buggy inter-device communication, as well as charging activation and issues with charging speed, and overall accuracy of charge levels.
Dickson says engineers have had hardware and software issues communicating with AirPower and devices placed on the mat, especially the communication of Apple Watch and AirPod charging data to the iPhone which is supposed to monitor the charge level of all devices on the mat.

● Mechanical and interference issues
The mechanism used for multi-device charging (comprised of 21 and 24 power coils of various sizes) which are broken into three charging groups is extremely difficult to build or refine, resulting in significant interference. This reduces the efficiency of the charging mat and contributes to heat issues.

Dickson also notes the complexity of circuitry is also a significant challenge which likely can't be overcome unless the device is made slightly thicker and larger, something Apple does not want to do.

Consensus among engineers is that AirPower is unlikely to debut this year. It's possible that the AirPower concept and trademark may be applied to an all new product which will include 'unmentioned features' but sources say it wouldn't be unveiled before spring 2019.

uh, they do sell similar pads just like apple's airpower; even iClarified and Redmond Pie advertises them for sale. Have I bought one yet? No, but I know they sell them.

I get it that there are underlying "issues," but how do 3rd party creators able to make something similar to this device, make it work, and sell it??

No one able to do it as yet. What you talking about 3rd party Chargers are all different. This tech is different.

This wouldn’t be that bad if Apple didn’t promote it , getting a few peoples hopes up and for now it maybe not coming out. I hope they do iron out the kinks and put this out cause it is impressive even if it might cost a arm and a leg.
