Apple to Focus on Selling Third Party TV Services Rather Than Seriously Competing With Netflix [Report]

Apple's new video strategy will reportedly focus on selling third party TV services rather than seriously competing with Netflix as an original content creator, according to Recode.

After years of circling the TV business, Apple is finally ready to make its big splash: On Monday it will unveil its new video strategy, along with some of the new big-budget TV shows it is funding itself. One thing Apple won’t do is unveil a serious competitor to Netflix, Hulu, Disney, or any other entertainment giant trying to sell streaming video subscriptions to consumers.

It's believed that Apple will focus on helping other companies sell their video subscriptions to its users, taking a cut of the transaction. The company could sell its own shows, perhaps as part of a bundle of other services; however, Recode believes that for now they should be viewed as very expensive giveaways.


In order to sell subscriptions, Apple plans to make a new storefront that is more prominent for customers with an Apple TV and other Apple hardware. It may also offer its own bundles, for example, a package of HBO, Showtime, and Starz at a lower price than they would cost individually.

Apple is expected to host and serve the content streams, unlike how the TV app currently works, giving it access to the data generated by viewers.
