Apple has unveiled a new seventh generation iPod touch with an A10 Fusion chip, AR, Group FaceTime, and up to 256GB of storage.

The Apple-designed A10 Fusion chip brings improved performance in games, and for the first time on iPod, immersive augmented reality (AR) experiences and Group FaceTime, making it easy to chat with family members, friends or colleagues simultaneously. The new iPod touch is available to order on apple.com and in the Apple Store app starting today and in stores later this week.

“We’re making the most affordable iOS device even better with performance that is twice as fast as before, Group FaceTime and augmented reality starting at just $199,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Product Marketing. “The ultra-thin and lightweight design of iPod touch has always made it ideal for enjoying games, music and so much more wherever you go.”

Actually, with Apples sales falling so fast due to their higher high costs, with new trade embargoes likely to make it even worse, making a cheap device which CAN handle the latest games and apps makes a LOT of sense. It may not be cutting edge, but it’s how Apple hopes to weather the next few years. What’s more, it’s also likely to sell even more AirPods, which are now their #1 growth area.

Ridiculous. How can Apple release this iPod? It’s like they’re just reusing old r&d now. This design is ancient. Would have been super nice if they majorly updated the design and made it full screen. Instead they opt to keep it super old and as cheap as possible. It just looks old and cheap now. Horrible release.

Just buy an older iPhone off eBay and use it as an iPod

That depends. What games will you play that don't crash if the performance is strong enough to overcome even simple 2D graphics? I played SFPA (really good and youtubers covered it) on the 5S and the game would always crash at a certain point in a bonus area where I always make it about halfway and always cuts off at that certain point every time I go back to it, but on my XR it never crashed when I got to that exact same point every time.

How does a 256gb model cost $200 more than a 32gb model? The difference in cost between the two chips may be $50 at most. I thought maybe they learned their lesson with the iPhone prices...

So you can see how greedy they are. Kill the ideea of adding microSD cards along with sim cards and triple the price on memory flash drives. Good for them, bad for us.
