New MacBook Air Has Slower SSD [Report]

Apple's new cheaper MacBook Air features SSD storage that has significantly slower read speeds, according to a new report from Consomac.

The Disk Speed ​​Test tool from Blackmagic tells us that the 2019 MacBook Air SSD with 256 GB of storage is capable of speeds of 1 GB/s write and 1.3 GB/s read . Last year's equivalent model was 920 MB/s write and 2 GB/s read. There is therefore a slight improvement in writing, but the speed of reading is in sharp decline. On the side of the model equipped with 128 GB of storage, we measured flow rates of 500 MB/s write and 1.3 GB/s read; this big difference in writing performance for the small model already existed with the 2018 models.

For most customers purchasing a MacBook Air, the lower read speeds should not be noticeable in day to day usage. For $100 less than the previous generation, the new MacBook Air also features a True Tone Retina Display and a tweaked butterfly keyboard.
