New 5G iPhones Will Likely Support Sub-6GHz and mmWave But That Could Change Next Year [Report]

Apple's new 5G iPhones are widely expected to support both sub-6GHz and mmWave frequency bands; however, that could change next year, according to a DigiTimes report via MacRumors.

Apple's 2020 series of iPhones will work on both sub-6GHz and millimeter wave 5G networks, and the vendor is considering introducing its iPhones supporting either mmWave or sub-6GHz for specific markets next year, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Sub-6Ghz offers slower speeds but broader coverage; whereas, mmWave provides faster speeds with smaller coverage areas.

It's possible that Apple could choose to selectively offer sub-6GHz or mmWave models depending on their availability or ubiquity in a specific market. Carriers in the United States are deploying on both bands.

Most users will want to connect to a mmWave network if possible as those can put out impressive speeds. Samsung recently used two test mobile devices and its 5G mmWave Access Unit to achieve approximately 4.3 Gbps speeds on each device, reaching a peak speed of 8.5Gbps across both devices. A recent OpenSignal report found that Verizon's average speed for users on its 5G mmWave network is 506.1Mbps.
