OWC Tears Down the New 27-inch iMac [Video]

OWC has posted a teardown of Apple's new 27-inch iMac.

As previously reported, the iMac does not have a mechanical hard drive. On most storage configurations, the SSD storage is soldered to the logic board. Only the 4TB and 8TB configurations have an expansion connector.

The 27-inch now features a 1080p FaceTime camera and two forward facing microphones.

The CPU is still socketed and the RAM is user replaceable without needing to teardown the machine. Upgrading your own RAM can save you thousands so we highly recommend purchasing the new iMac with 8GB of RAM and adding more RAM yourself.

Personally, like most of the 2020 iMac, I prefer suction cups and tape to unknown screw types, or locked down displays. Don’t worry, it won’t be long until no one can do any self-repair/upgrades, but let’s not call for even more access restrictions just yet!

Nice to see, but better to see if Apple will ever screw in the display instead of requiring suction cups and new glue strips.

Man, that SSD is a lot smaller than I expected. With so much empty space in that 27” frame, you’d think they’d have expanded the air cooling, giving the power they’re equipping these with, like they did with the 16” MacBook Pro, which was a vast improvement over the previous models. Maybe in the new Silicon Apple chip version? Still, I hope this will chill a 10-core I9 running intensive graphic loads, as dead space isn’t the same as active cooling recycling air.
