ITunes won't let me restore iPhone backup

IPhone model: 4s 32gig Firmware: iOS 6.0.1 Jailbroken: yes So I did a semi restore on my iPhone but ran in to a problem when trying to restore my contacts, calendar ect. But iTunes won't let me! It says the file is corrupt or not compatible when I "restore from backup". Can I get my contacts back without updating to 7.1? If I do decide to update to 7.1 and sacrifice the jailbreak for a few months will the backup work?
