Microsoft having just launched its Surface tablet is going on the offensive declaring Apple's new iPad mini as a 'recreational tablet', reports AllThingsD.
Talking about Windows 8 laptops that sell for $279, Steven Sinofsky of Microsoft, said “These are fantastic machines.” Sinofsky contends they’re not netbooks or bargain-basement machines and are good enough to last a student through college.
“It’s $279,” he said, “Here we are, talking about seven-inch recreational tablets for $329.”
That $329 is in reference to Apple's new iPad mini which has been criticized for being sold at a price that is too high.
In what appears to support this determination, Amazon announced that it set a sales record for its Kindle Fire HD tablets the day after Apple announced the smaller tablet.

That's right Tony I'm with you. Don't count the countless things they do to screw you on warranty and hell after warranty ridiculous prices. $250 for keyboard made of 3 sheets of plastic??? $150-200 for microphone (10-50 cents real price). $150-200 for home button (1-5$ real price). $150-200 for back glass of 4/4S (2-5$ real price). Max $30 work to do it. And so on...

Microsoft doesn't have a good track record at predicting anything.
Balmer dissed the iPhone when it first came out too.
It went on to be worth more than all ofMicrosoft.

The guy is right. The mini is a recreational device. But that doesn't change the fact that Windows 8 has issues in more ways than I can count! The design and features of the surface tablet look awesome on the outside. It's downfall will be the operating system.

This from a company so desperate for relevance that they have to pay people $100 to stand in a queue - to give the impression that anyone wants their stuff. I'll lay odds that this guy would be happy if Microsoft sold 1/100 the number of iPad Minis up to Christmas.

You shouldn't discount Microsoft's comments, remember when the iPhone came out and Steve Ballmer dismissed it as too expensive, oh wait..
