iOS Surpasses 50% Sales Share for the First Time [Report]

According to data released today by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, iOS was the top selling smartphone platform over the 12 week period ending November 25th, crossing the 50% mark for the first time.

During the same period Android sales share is said to have declined 10.9% to 41.9% and Windows Phone sales share reached just 2.7%.

Notably, a recent comScore report based on total subscriber share found Android to have 53.7 percent market share while Apple’s share increased 0.7 percentage points to 35 percent.

AT&T maintained its status as the top selling carrier with 35.4% of smartphones sold. Verizon sold 31.9% and Sprint sold 14.5% (down 5%).

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech analyst Mary-Ann Parlato states, “The iPhone 5 has been successful this period however we also see that Apple’s older models – the iPhone 4S and 4 have also contributed to the growing share of iOS.” Parlato continues, “This is particularly the case for first-time smartphone iPhone buyers where we see the older models still selling well amongst this group.”

Interestingly, of those who purchased an iPhone in November, 27% upgraded from another smartphone, 34% upgraded from a previous iPhone, and 40% upgraded from a feature phone.
