Microsoft Could Make Billions If It Released Office for iPad

Microsoft could make billions if it released Office for the iPad, says Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Holt.

Holt figures that if Microsoft were to release Office for iOS, pricing it at $60, it could potentially sell it to roughly 30 percent of iPad users. Extend that to an installed base of 200 million iPads in 2014, and Holt concludes that Microsoft would generate about $2.5 billion in revenue per year on Office for iPad — less Apple’s App Store commission.

Although, these figures are estimates, Microsoft is of course missing a revenue opportunity here. The company likely sees Office for Surface as an important competitive advantage; however, it's unclear if the loss in revenue is worth the tradeoff.

Microsoft CFO Peter Klein recently suggested that the door is still open for Office on the iPad.

“We have a history of cross-platform delivery broadly in productivity, whether it’s Office on the Mac, or email, communications, note-taking,” Klein said. “And with our Web applications you can access Office documents, do some light editing on any device and on any browser. So there’s a lot of things that we’re already doing to meet that need. And we’ll continue to think about other things going forward.”

Notably, it appears Microsoft already has Office for iOS ready but is purposely holding back on release. In December of last year, Microsoft's support site leaked references to the unreleased software.

Who'd pay $60? You can buy pages and numbers etc for $6.99

A very good point.. I have pages and I find it sculptured for the iPad perfectly. Microsoft -- if in doubt do nowt!! I love the iPad the way it is.. maybe a FREE PowerPoint app?? but £60 is ridiculous

I agree $60 is way overpriced considering Pages $10.00 price tag. However, for my college courses Microsoft Word is a requirement so I'm still stuck carrying around my laptop and iPad. It would be better if Microsoft Office was there to suit the needs of college professors and certain employee vocations.

Apple's iWork suite is 100 times better than office and can be opened in the office suite

I still prefer office. I have used both. I didn't know documents could be opened in both. If they can be edited in Office suite as well then there is something to consider.

Its not going to be $60 if they sold it for the ipad! That is insanely high priced so your numbers are way off. How much is Apple's suite?

They will never release Office for IPad. They are pushing the SurfaceRT. If they release Office for iDevices, they will kill their own product

True but who cares about the surface. Lol. It was not as successful as they thought it would be. Office is the only Microsoft product that's still useful and awesome. I love iProducts and iOS but not their pages and keynotes etc...
