Spotify is planning to ask music labels for the right to extend its free pricing tier to mobile devices, reports The Verge. The music subscription service is set to meet with music labels in the coming weeks to renew their licensing agreements. Reportedly, they will also ask for substantial price breaks.

The Stockholm-based Spotify has already started negotiations with Warner Music and will begin talks with Sony and Universal in the coming weeks, according to several music industry sources. (A Spotify spokesperson declined to comment on this story.) These negotiations with music’s "big three" labels will likely go a long way to determining whether Spotify reaches profitability, a crucial threshold as it increasingly competes with Apple and other cash-rich players in the digital music market.

While its unclear if the labels will be more flexible in pricing or licensing, it's widely believed that a deal will be reached.

"Everybody in the industry wants to see Spotify succeed," one industry insider told The Verge. "Nobody in the industry can afford to see them go down the tubes."

Comment, sure. Why are people wasting their hard-earned money paying for spotify every month, or any month? Are you kidding? The radio isn't bad. Click on an artist or song you like and you can have it conjure up a radio station based on that. Or a genre-themed station. What more do you need? Gotta hear the latest Bieber single? Turn on your FM radio or go to youtube. Better yet, go spin some vinyl records. Sounds nice, huh?

Who and the blue hell cares about this "spotify" crap. Good thing there are many other options open such as Pandora which is free btw, and plain good old Internet radio such as wunder radio. Never paid a dime for this and never will. Shit!

There's very few complaints I have about spotify. I have the paid version and I love it. Music loads fast and clear. The music selection is great. The "radio" algorithm has to be improved a little but the rest of the service has been great. I hope the price break goes through.
