"I have seen screenshots of the newest Flickr — not to be confused with the new Flickr from last year — and it is yet another effort to slickify the offering, put sharing front and center and remove the dreaded Yahoo tool bar above the service," says Kara Swisher.
The new look is said to more tightly coordinate the web and mobile version. There is little white space with high focus on big photos.
Yahoo is redoing the app because it wants it to perform better. The current redesign moved the app from the being #64 in photo and video to #9 but it has since dropped to #43.
To lead the redesign efforts Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer hired Bernardo Hernandez from Google - who she once worked with to take over Flickr.

Editing suggestion:
"To lead the redesign efforts Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer hired Bernardo Hernandez from Google - who she once worked with to take over Flickr."
might read more smoothly, thus:
"To lead the redesign efforts Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer hired Bernardo Hernandez, with whom she once worked, from Google."
Also not the correction of "who" used as an object, to the preferred version, "whom."

I'm sure you meant what you said, but you didn't say what you meant. Your meaning is lost in a tangle of poorly constructed syntax.

The yahoo toolbar spamware, and yahoo homepage hijacking redirect makes me dislike yahoo so much I will never use any of their services again.
