Apple has reportedly hired Philip Stanger, CEO and founder of Wifarer, an indoor positioning startup that helps users navigate malls, museums, and other venues.

TechCrunch reports that Stanger now works at Apple in a leadership role. Interestingly, Apple did not acquire his company and neither will the company be shut down. Lise Murphy, previously VP of Marketing and Stanger's wife, has taken over the CEO role.

Wifarer is not shutting down. At least not yet. In fact, promises Murphy, it is “poised to introduce some exciting new IPS [indoor positioning system] solutions for both iOS and Android. These new solutions will offer class leading levels of accuracy and consistency not previously seen in current IPS solutions,” she says. The company is also working to roll out new tools to its Android developers, which will simplify the adoption of IPS in existing iOS or Android applications, we’re told.

Back in March it was reported that Apple was working on indoor mapping alongside other improvements to Maps including transit directions. However, just yesterday another report indicated that those enhancements to Maps might not be ready for iOS 8.0.
