The Broadway Trade Center is over 1 million square feet and stretches nearly a full square block from 8th to 9th on Broadway. It was purchased by Waterbridge Capital earlier this year for $115 - $130 million. The building originally opening in 1908 as the Hamburger department store which sold cloth and home furnishings. It also featured a soda fountain, restaurant, grocery store, post office, and roof garden. In 1923 it was purchased by the May Co department store chain who added a nine-story tower connected to the original five story structure and a garage.
Rumors swirling are Apple Corp will have a campus in the building with multiple uses such as office space, residential, and retail. There is also talk of Apple opening up a branch for their recent 3 Billion dollar purchase of Beats By Dre, which is a critically acclaimed subscription streaming music service, which makes the popular Beats headphones, speakers and audio software.
Notably, the Blackstone Apartments and Ace Hotel (each around 100,000sf) additions to the 9th & Broadway corridor has revitalized the corridor bringing in new tenants including: Acne Studios, Urban Outfitters, angelo:HOME, Umami Burger, Om Nom Organics Market, Aesop, Big Gay Ice Cream, Kinfolk Studios, Tanner Goods, A.P.C., 1810 restaurant, and OAK NYC. If the reports are accurate, Apple's presence would be a huge boom to the neighborhood.
