Amazon has launched free same-day delivery on over one million items to Amazon Prime members in 14 metro areas covering over 500 cities and towns.

Amazon Prime members shipping to eligible zip codes within 14 metro areas across the U.S. receive FREE Same-Day Delivery on qualifying orders over $35. Orders must be placed before the Same-Day Delivery order cutoff time (typically noon) to qualify; orders placed after the cutoff qualify for FREE One-Day Shipping.

Same-day orders under $35 are $5.99 per order for Prime members, and start at $9.98 for non-members.

“My focus is on how we can lower prices, and what can we do to make the lives of Prime customers better,” said Greg Greeley, VP of Amazon Prime, in an interview with GeekWire. Greeley said that initially items are limited to things that people most often request same-day shipping for. For example, in Seattle some of the most popular items are GoPro cameras, pet products, the Kindle Paperwhite, new video games and kitchen appliances.

“They are things you don’t necessarily need tonight, but you want tonight,” he said. “I think that list will continue to expand, particularly now that we’ve made it easy to find those items with the designated badges. They can run through their to-do list, and spend their afternoon on things other than running errands.”
