VLC is a good choice. Signal is a messaging app you really need, maybe Colloquy for IRC (and set a private bouncer somewhere so you get push messages). Similarly, consider a private or hosted ownCloud account and the belonging mobile client app. Replace the use of Safari with Dolphin or Ghostery, possibly Firefox if you must. Better maps exist than Apple or Google; CityMaps2Go fills my needs. Find a decent VOIP client and a free provider. And if you are into it, then just JB whenever you get the chance. Just to get Kodi is worth it but the possibilities to really make the phone finally yours and forget all the app sandboxing and Apple dictated restrictions is a cornucopia that just keeps on giving.

Except for maybe VLC, these apps don't seem to have much special value beyond locking you into specific ecosystems or data-sharing models. There are better alternatives.
