Discord App Gets Big Improvements [Video]

Discord has announced a major update to its app for mobile devices.

Starting today we're excited to share that "Discord but smol" is evolving so that you can take advantage of what makes your phone so great. Rather than retrofitting designs meant for mice and keyboards, it's a fresh look intended for the touchscreen that fits in your pocket. It's a faster, more reliable app than before, with new features that help you and your friends chat and hang out on the go, like voice messages, and a 25 MB free file upload limit. And most importantly, this time we designed mobile as its own independent experience — as something you can use as your main Discord app when you're on the go, not as something you use alongside the desktop app.




There's a ton of new features in this update. Here's a look at some of the key improvements...

FIND YOUR STUFF

● MESSAGES & SERVERS TABS: Easily find your DMs in one place and server conversations in another.
● SUPERCHARGED SEARCH: We breathed some new life into our search to let you easily find people, media, links, and all of your past DMs in a flash.
●CHANNEL AND G/DM DETAILS: Quickly browse a channel or G/DM to see every member, shared media, links, pins, and more from a single location.
● BETTER NOTIFICATIONS TAB: We simplified notifications to make it easier for you to keep up with the stuff you care most about like…notifications.
● SEARCH YOUR SETTINGS: No more scrolling through every setting (unless that's your thing) because now you can just use the new search bar instead!

CUSTOMIZE IT UP

● UPDATED THEMES: We made dark theme darker and added the new Midnight theme, which is pure black to save battery and go easy on your eyes.
● CALL IT THE YOU TAB: The You tab is your dedicated space to view and customize how you appear to others on Discord.
● MESSAGE PREVIEWS: Make every unread DM a total surprise when you turn off message previews for added privacy and a more simplified chat look.

STAY CONNECTED WITH FRIENDS

● NEW VOICE & VIDEO: We updated the UI and interactions for voice and video calls to make the space more cozy for you and your friends.
● ACTIVE NOW: See what your friends are up to in real time and hop in to join them. Maybe they're listening to music, playing a game, or just chilling in a voice channel.
● FAVORITE G/DMS: Press and hold a G/DM then tap "Favorite" and it will always show up at the top of your Messages tab.
● FAVORITE CHANNELS: Add your fav channel (hello #Panda-Facts) to your "Favorites" and it will always be at the top of that server's channels.
● FASTER GDM CREATION: Not only will we let you know if you already have an existing G/DM when adding a friend, we also made it faster and easier!
● ACTIVITIES IN G/DMS: You can now launch Activities in voice calls in G/DMs for even more ways to have fun with friends.

SO FRESH, SO CLEAN, SO MOBILE

● SWIPE-TO-REPLY: We added swipe-to-reply for faster comebacks, wittier retorts, rapid rejoinders, ridiculous ripostes, and quicker quips.
● NEW ICONS: We gave the in-app icons a refresh and added a ton of new ones, including some that are animated. That's pretty neat.

EVEN MORE MESSAGING

● MEME MORE WITH REMIX: Remix gives you the power to meme whatever you want by adding text, drawings, emoji, and stickers to images and videos.
● HELLO VOICE MESSAGES: Say more with voice messages: Just tap, hold to record, and release to send a voice message.
● FILE UPLOAD LIMIT INCREASE: The free file upload limit has been raised from 8 MB to 25 MB. Let those GIFs fly free.
● FILE UPLOAD ON IOS: iOS users can now easily upload and share files directly from their mobile devices.
● CUSTOM VIDEO QUALITY: You can now choose the default quality of your video uploads and Discord will automatically compress them.
● DATA SAVING MODE: Use this setting to send media files in lower quality and reduce data usage on your cellular plan.
● MEDIA PICKER: We upgraded the media picker so it's easier to see multiple photos at once and upload files.
● MEDIA UPLOAD PREVIEWS: Now you see your media uploading the way it will appear once it's sent, with a progress indicator. That's progress!
● MEDIA GRID: Media files will now appear in a nice, neat grid that you can open and swipe through at your leisure.
● SILENT MESSAGES: Add @silent at the very beginning of your message to send it without any push or desktop notifications. Shhh.
● NEW LINK EMBEDS: Embedded channel links now look like, well, embedded channel links.
● IMPROVED MEDIA EMBEDS: You can now load and play your favorite YouTube and Spotify videos without ever leaving the Discord app. YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE!

SO FAST, SO SMOOTH

● FASTER LAUNCH TIME: Through multiple updates this year, we reduced app open time by 55% on Android and 43% on iOS so you can get to chatting faster.
● IMPROVED STABILITY: We've made the app more reliable by fixing several issues that were causing the app to crash, which we hope no one misses.
● MESSAGE CACHING: Your device will store up to 700 recent messages in channels/DMs so that conversations are available as soon as you open the app.
● BACKGROUND REFRESH: We sync new messages in the background so you're up to date with your friends' latest conversations when you open Discord.
● AUTO-PAUSE VIDEO: When you're on a voice call and bandwidth is spotty, Discord will automatically turn off video to maintain a smoother call.
