Analysis Of Apple Lawsuit Against Samsung Reveals Sales Figures

Former Engadget editor Nilay Patel has published a thorough analysis of Apple's lawsuit against Samsung for copying its devices.

Taken as a group, it feels like a remarkably solid case - Samsung can't just up and countersue Apple with its own patents and hope to walk away with a handshake and a cross-license because of the various trademark, trade dress, and design patent claims. How the company decides to deal with those issues remains to be seen; there's no question in my mind that Samsung designed TouchWiz to look and feel as much like iOS as possible, and then marketed it as such.

Interestingly, Apple reveals some sales and advertising figures in the suit. The company has sold "over 60 million" iPod touches as of March 2011, as well as 108m iPhones and 19m iPads. They also spent $2 billion advertising the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad from 2007 to 2010.

For its part, Samsung says it will "respond actively to this legal action taken against us through appropriate legal measures to protect our intellectual property... Apple is one of our key buyers of semiconductors and display panels. However, we have no choice but respond strongly this time"

Unfortunately samsung has a remarkably similar product with icons and dock. Now they could have changed the design a bit not to resemble the IOS but they chose not to. Think about in a business stand point create a product similar to the competition and let them do all the advertising. Smart move samsung, but now its time to pay the piper.

But they are just copycats from Apple products. Nobody has created nothing like iPhone and iPad. Now everyone have copies. They must be sued

Are you guys serious? Apple was the first.....so what. Not sure who invented the car (I'm guessing ford), but if no other companies jumped on the wagon and started copying and progressing we'd all be driving Ford Model X by now. As a consumer, we should all want copying and the competition in a huge battle. I own 2 iPhone4, an iPad1, Mac Book Air and a couple of iPods that I haven't used in a few years (also had a few different iPhones in the past). So the comments about me not being able to get Apple products is silly. The Samsung device has some nice features that Apple doesn't (USB, Video out, removable battery). I think it was the market that told Samsung to take the Android OS and make it feel like iOS. The first gen of the Samsung had a lot of issues, but so does every first gen device (I remember how crappy the first iPhone was). I know a few tech nerds that changed to Android and are very happy that they did. I'm not saying one is better than the other, I'm saying that those of you that haven't used both should really understand what the differences are before shooting your mouth off. I'm a MAC and Windows user and I prefer MS even though there are inherent problems. FYI the tablet PC has been available for a very long time, it took Apple's cult following to buy in to the concept and bring it to the mainstream. Apple did not invent the touch interface and they did not invent the smart phone. Taking existing tech and making it better doesn't give you exclusivity. Apple definitely made large improvements for smart phones and tablets, no argument there, but exclusivity in this market makes no sense. What about that black berry that looks an awful lot like the iPhone or the new windows phone that has a lot of similarities? I say YES, lets get these guys pitted against each other and bring the large profits they take in down and keep more $$ in my pocket. The margins Apple takes in on the iPhone is crazy. Go compare the release of the iPhone to their stock. Their OSX products sure weren't getting them anywhere ;p. Sorry for the novel :)
