Google has distributed a test version of its upcoming Maps app for iOS to some individuals outside of the company, according to a WSJ source.
Google has been putting the finishing touches on the app before submitting it for approval to the Apple iTunes store, this person said, though it's unclear exactly when that will happen. If Google's new mapping app is accepted into the iTunes store, it will directly compete against Apple's new mapping software that is preinstalled on its mobile devices.
A Google spokesman said, "We believe Google Maps are the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps in the world. Our goal is to make Google Maps available to everyone who wants to use it, regardless of device, browser, or operating system."
Notably, the site also reported that the Apple Maps team is now reporting to SVP Eddy Cue.
Mr. Cue has been hands-on with the maps team and participates in regular meetings to fix the product, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Apple just enabled turn-by-turn navigation for Maps in Australia yesterday.
