Verizon has issued a statement saying that iPhone 5 customers will not be charged for cellular data used while Wi-Fi.
"Under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network," Verizon said in a statement provided to The Loop. "Apple has a fix that is being delivered to Verizon customers right on their iPhone 5. Verizon Wireless customers will not be charged for any unwarranted cellular data usage."
The carrier update to fix this issue was released yesterday. You can find instructions on how to install the update here.

I wonder if that fix also locks the phone, Apple is known to not tell every thing only the things that people like to hear.

Verizon's iPhone 5 runs mainly off CDMA but has a SIM card slot for the Verizon 4G LTE nano-sim. Right now Verizon's iPhone 5 is SIM unlocked out of the box meaning you can use it on any international carrier without having to physically go and unlock the phone. Technically it works on GSM too.
