Apple has hired BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, a popular New Zealand-born DJ, likely to further its efforts in developing a new music streaming service based on Beats Music.

Zane Lowe is leaving Radio 1 after more than a decade at the station. The 41-year-old DJ, who joined the network in 2003, is moving to the US to work at Apple. Zane, whose last show will air on 5 March, said he had "loved every minute" of being at Radio 1.

Annie Mac, 36, will take over Zane's current weekday evening new music show, starting on 9 March and said she was "excited and humbled" at the opportunity.

"I want to thank everyone at Radio 1 for their support and friendship," said Zane. "The station has allowed me to share incredible music with the country's best music fans."

Zane's show focused on new music with exclusive interviews and live sessions. It's unclear exactly what role he will take at Apple but we'll update you if we hear more.

His final show will be aired on March 5th.

WOW! I've listened to a few of his shows and heard some of his live sets on YouTube videos. That's crazy they got him. He's a popular DJ in the industry. Hes interviewed a lot of big artists and has introduced first plays a lot of new songs. Wonder if apple is planning some sort of live shows or something. Or maybe he'll be a part or curation or playlists. Can't wait to see what happens.
