The Plex Media Player App is Now Available on the New Apple TV

Plex has announced that their media player app is now available for free on the new Apple TV.

There truly isn’t any other platform we’ve wanted to be on for as long as we have the Apple TV. Today’s the day, and we’re celebrating. The app is free in the app store for everyone, and requires the latest media server (note: you may need to download and install the very latest server manually for now on certain NAS devices).

Running the Plex Media Server on your computer lets you organize and stream all your video, music, and photos to the Apple TV.

"Plex organizes all of your video, music, TV, and photo collections, and streams them to all of your screens. With the free Plex Media Server on your home computer and Plex for Apple TV, you can watch and listen to all of your personal media on your iOS device and share it with friends and family."

Check out some screenshots of the new app below and let us know what you think in the comments. Do you prefer Plex to just streaming from your iTunes Library?

@Dragance - You'll be able to stream from any network based location, including a NAS. As long as the Plex Server knows about the network location it will stream from it. This can easily be configured/added in the Plex Server.

The Apple TV itself does not really play anything when comes to Plex. It simply relays the video file from a local Plex Server. The Plex Server transcodes the video files and relays/streams it to the AppleTV. So yes, it will most likely play mkv/avi files.

Free my ass, missleading marketing. To enable streaming you must pay... Nit much but still.

How about streaming from NAS device? No? Well, to bad. Only reason I will be remotely interested.

Do you have to store your movies on your Computer or can you attach an external drive to the computer and stream them that way? And can Siri find them?

I'm guessing you could do both (whole point of Plex) !

From what I can say, Siri only browses thru iTunes & online streamable content! For obvious indexing reasons but maybe Plex automatically adds index words to your content so you can use Siri... I guess we'll see when we download it !
