Apple to Release iPhone With Curved Display as Early as Next Year [WSJ]

Apple may release an iPhone with a curved display as early as next year, according to anew report from the Wall Street Journal. Suppliers have been asked to increase output of OLED displays and submit prototype screens with higher resolution than the ones used by Samsung.

The Cupertino, Calf., company has been battling slowing smartphone sales and is under pressure to deliver a hit phone when the iPhone marks its 10th anniversary next year. An iPhone with an OLED screen could be introduced as one of several models to be unveiled, people familiar with the matter said, but would come with a higher price tag because OLED displays are more expensive to produce.

The WSJ says Apple has more than 10 prototypes being considered and may decide not to release the curved display model.

Apple is expected to rely on Samsung initially to supply most of its OLED displays; however, it wants LG Display, Japan Display, and Sharp to become suppliers in 2018.

We've been hearing reports for some time that the 10th anniversary iPhone will be a major update. It will purportedly have a front glass cover and chassis, joined by a metal bezel and an edge-to-edge display that has no bezels on the top and bottom. Additionally, the front camera, Touch ID, speaker, and other sensors will apparently be embedded into the display. Another report claims that the device would be a clear piece of glass with a next-generation OLED screen. More recently, Apple is said to have be equipping the phone with wireless charging and a 3D camera.
