The iPhone 3G is now being sold unlocked directly from Apple in the city of Hong Kong, according to a MacNN report.
Despite no prior announcements Apple's site reveals that an 8GB phone is selling for $5,400 HK ($692), while a 16GB model costs $6,200 HK ($794).
According to Apple, an "iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation."

Bud,
I think this is the first time you CAN ACTUALLY purchase it without a contract.

This is actually old news, since the iPhones in HK have ALWAYS been unlocked when they were sold on launch. In fact, if you take a HK iPhone to the US and ask AT&T to issue a SIM with iPhone plan, there is no commitment for two years since it shows in the phone's serial number that it is an unlocked phone.

I guess it's like the first sim you insert, you get locked to that network.. It's like that in most countries.. But you can choose any carrier..
You can get your iPhone unlocked in Australia directly by apple, legally, by paying some fee to the carrier..
Telstra charges $150 au while optus and vodafone charge $80 only.. And then you get settings on your itunes.. And you can insert any sim..

This is almost like the original price of the iPhones when they first came out so its not that painfully priced
