The issues with the iPhone 4 proximity sensor will likely be fixed in the next software update, according to Steve Jobs.
During the iPhone 4 press conference earlier today, Jobs indicated that the company was tracking some problems with the sensor and will hopefully address them in the next update.
In our own experience the proximity sensor seems to activate the screen during a call despite it being switched off when initially placed to your ear. This can cause you to accidentally press the mute button, end call button, or any other button that is currently displayed.

Take it back to the store and try to get a replacement while you still can. I've heard of people having this issue, but my phone takes pictures just fine.
