China Unicom Offers Jailbreak Service Alongside iPhone Sales

China Unicom is reportedly advertising a jailbreak service along with the sale of the iPhone or iPad.

According to a Chinese netizen, he saw these posters at a China Unicom store located in Dongguan. He was shocked to see that Unicom is providing the jailbreak service to their customers, and at the same time, he asked the staff for the prices of the iPhone 4. The 32GB model with no contract will be selling at $6980 yuan (about $1025 USD), while the 16GB is unknown yet.
Customers will also get free cases from Unicom when purchasing the iPhone 4 or iPad. Pre-ordering begins now.
Every phone sold in China is unlocked so that users can choose their own service provider. The American model of buying the service and binding the user to a company for two years is communist in its utter lack of freedom for the consumer. The Chinese cellphone market is more open. You buy your own cellphone, whatever the cost, and then you go to service provider of your choice and buy a SIM card and add some money to your card as you see fit. If you want data, then you agree to pay more for that. You also have the choice of service contracts, but the majority of the cellphone market is free-wheeling in China and elsewhere outside America.
We can take a page from the Chinese and the rest of the world in this respect: buy your own phone; choose your provider and buy a SIM card; pay as you use. If you are not a heavy phone user, then $50 will last a very long timeas long as service providers don't get greedy and insist on usage expiry dates.
Our cellphone service market is over-regulated and skewed away from the interests of the consumer.
I get you point, but communist is not the right word, is consumerist, they need to be sure you will expend a lot of money, not just buy the phone and use it as iPod (if you want).
As long as you buy the phone, that's all that matters. It's none of their business how you use it, and compelling buyers to use the phone in prescribed ways has contributed to jailbreaking and unlocking. The wisest market choice is to build the phone and let the users decide how to use it and with what service company. Apple is communist in its instincts; it's not enough to buy their product; they also want to control our usage in such a way that we have no right to the product. Our purchase price is mere rental. I'd far prefer a system in which we bought the phones and selected our service providers ourselves. Let the market shape our choices in this respect.
Under a communist system like China, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba, everything including a legit Apple iPhone needs jailbreaking to make it work. Well, they are dwelling under a big time jailed broken system though!
Chinese models do not have wireless. Moreover, Chinese models are often not quite current with the latest hardwareI think they try to get rid of old stock before moving in new stuff. Besides that, and maybe surveillance software (who knows?!?), it's the same.
