It looks like the FaceTime App released in iOS 4.3 beta 1 actually contains support for the iPad.
iPaDevice reader DjBeppee has figured out how to decrypt the files and get it running on the first generation iPad.
The app looks somewhat similar to the FaceTime application for Mac OS X. Check it out in the video and screenshots below.

could a hack be developed to use the usb port with an external web cam to enable the first gen ipads to use facetime? or maybe Apple could do the right thing and make this a part of iOS 4.3 instead?
