If you have the iPad camera kit you can connect your iPhone to the USB port of the kit. Works the same no need for special expensive cables.

it's useful when you want to transfer a batch of photo's from somebody else's idevice to your own or vice versa

I needed this in the old times since the launch of the first iPad. But I know I don't, especially after Apple released iCloud with photo stream.
But the price is not that bad comparing the price of the adapter that Apple is selling....

iCloud is free. Photos don't count toward iCloud. Just need room in your Apple devices.

Only 30 days of pics can go to the iCloud, that's why.

They can go to any iDevice but once the pic hits the 30 day mark, they are gone. You can't save those pics to another device

Video does not sync via iCloud or if you are in an unconnected area.

Transfer cable doesn't sync videos either. We're talking about photos.
